Implementation of Windows 11

1. End of support for Windows 10

Microsoft ends support for the Windows 10 operating system on January 12, 2027. After this date, development and distribution of patches and security updates for the given operating system will be discontinued. Starting on 1.9.2025, the Informatics Centre will begin a gradual update of end devices owned by the Prague University of Economics and Business to the Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC (v24H2) operating system.

2. Windows 11 installation process

To install Windows 11 on your computer, contact the helpdesk, and also pay attention to the information below.

2.1. Requirements

The minimum recommended configuration for installing Windows 11 on Prague University of Economics and Business devices is as follows:

  • Intel 8th generation processor (2017) or AMD Ryzen 2000 / Zen+ (2018) or newer.
  • 8 gigabytes (GB) of RAM
  • 250 GB SSD storage
  • UEFI BIOS with Secure Boot support
  • TPM 2.0 chip
  • The device is registered as property of the Prague University of Economics and Business and properly labeled with an inventory tag

Windows 11 cannot be installed on computers that do not meet the parameters above; in such cases, replacement of the given end device with new hardware is required.

2.2 Data and software backup

During the installation of Windows 11, all locally stored data, including installed applications, is deleted. Users are responsible for backing up their own data; data stored on shared volumes (e.g., home directory H: and group disk G:), in cloud storage (OneDrive, Owncloud, Dropbox, etc.) and on websites (WordPress, SharePoint) is not affected by the Windows 11 installation.

Software included in the school installation of Windows 10 is also included in the school installation of Windows 11. Other software must be reinstalled after updating to Windows 11 (for licensed software, we recommend verifying license transfer options and availability of a Windows 11–compatible version with its administrator/supplier).

2.3 Installation process itself

The installation time depends on the current workload of the helpdesk, availability of hardware drivers for the given device, and its performance. Typically, the device is processed by the next day after its handover (within 24 hours), but given the factors above we cannot guarantee this timeframe.

Finalization of the installation then takes place directly with the user, where final system adjustments are made based on the user’s specific needs. With the exception of workplaces with complex software configurations, please allow approximately 15–30 minutes for this finalization in your presence.

4. Frequently asked questions

How do I find out whether my device meets all the requirements for running Windows 11?
Contact the helpdesk, and our technician will assess whether you need new hardware or not.

I have an older printer/scanner. Can you guarantee that it will work under Windows 11?
It depends on the age of the device and whether it is supported by the manufacturer. In some cases, even very old devices work, but some features may not be available (often duplex printing or scanning).

Can the Informatics Centre lend me a replacement computer during the reinstallation?
Depending on available equipment capacity. However, preparing hardware for lending takes time that we could otherwise use for the actual reinstallation. In general, we recommend arranging a date for the procedure during a time when you may, for example, be taking vacation.

Can I postpone the reinstallation of my computer until the end of 2026?
Based on experience with transitions to previous operating system versions, we were busiest precisely near the end-of-support period. In general, the closer to the support end date, the longer the waiting times and the duration of installation. See the Schedule above.

Can the reinstallation be done without my presence?
The reinstallation itself yes, but we need you to back up all your data beforehand (during reinstallation all locally stored data will be permanently deleted). Final system settings (installation of printers, software, etc.) often need to be carried out directly under your user profile and therefore require your presence.

Is it possible to complete the installation finalization without my presence if I provide you with my account credentials?
No. Sharing your login credentials with another person violates Rector’s Directive 1/2007 as well as basic common sense.

Can Windows 11 installation be performed on private devices of Prague University of Economics and Business employees?
No. Our license agreement with Microsoft allows us to use the Windows 11 operating system only on devices owned by Prague University of Economics and Business.
