Remote Data Access

1. General information [menu]

There are several methods that you can use to access your data from devices that are not connected to VŠE network. Generally, it is not recommended to connect to VŠE network storages from unknown computers (internet cafe, etc.), these devices may be infected with viruses or malware which can compromise your login details. We also recommend that you do not use unknown and open wireless networks for the same purpose, because in such networks, there is a considerable chance that someone may eavesdrop on your communication.

2. Webdisk (formerly ADweb) [menu]

Webdisk is a VŠE implementation of web based file manager HTTP Commander. It’s possible to access data on your network drives (personal H: drive, subdivision G: drive, etc.) through this facility. Unlike e.g. cloud services, Webdisk has only limited ability to edit your documents online – for full-featured edit, you need to download the document and perform the necessary edits locally in your device. It is not needed to use VPN to access Webdisk from outside of VŠE network, although it’s recommended for enhanced security.

2.1 Access through HTTPS [menu]

With your web browser, open the page https://webdisk.vse.cz and sign in using your user name and password to InSIS. If the page does not load correctly, ensure that your browser is up to date.

2.2 Access through FTPS [menu]

It’s possible to access Webdisk through FTP as well. For that, you’ll need an FTP client (Total Commander, WinSCP, FileZilla apod.). Instructions to connect to Webdisk using Total Commander and WinSCP follow:

Connecting to Webdisk using Total Commander
1. In the Total Commander windows, select Network -> Protocol FTP – connect to server… , alternatively press `CTRL` + `F` .
2. Click on *New connection* .
3. Fill in connection parameters (backslash in the field User name can be typed using the keyboard shortcut `Right Alt` + `Q` ). You save the connection by clicking the OK button.
4. Choose webdisk.vse.cz in the list of connections and click on Connect.
5. Enter your InSIS oasswird.
6. Connected Webdisk FTP will be available in the list of your drives.

Open WinSCP, fill in connection parameters (backslash in the field Username can by typed using the keyboard shortcut `Right Alt` + `Q` ), and click on Login.

3. Network drive mapping [menu]

Individual network drives can be remotely mapped to your device as a network drive. To map a network drive, you must be connected to VPN.

Network drive mapping
1. Open Windows Explorer (alternatively by pressing `Win` + `E`). Click on This computer -> Computer -> Map network drive.
2. Enter path to the network drive: \\ad.vse.cz\VSE\home – personal H:\ drive \\ad.vse.cz\VSE\group – departmental drive G:\ \\ad.vse.cz\VSE\www – personal web Check Connect using different… and click on Finish. (backslash “\” can be typed by pressing `Right Alt` + `Q` )
3. Enter your username and password to InSIS.
4. Your mapped drive will be available in Windows Explorer and you can work with it as with a normal directory.

4. Cloud storages [menu]

On VŠE there are two cloud storages available, OneDrive and ownCloud. You can find detailed information in the links. You may of course also use different commercial cloud services (Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.), although all data from your documents are uploaded to service provider’s servers – that’s why we do not recommend you to use these services for documents containing personal information or other sensitive data.

5. Remote Desktop [menu]

Remote desktop allows you to connect to your school computer from virtually anywhere and it allows you to work with that computer as if you were physically sitting at it. In order for it to be possible to connect to the computer remotely it’s necessary to setup the Remote Desktop at that computer. You can also contact helpdesk to help you with the Remote Desktop setup. To use Remote Desktop, you must be connected to VPN and on the computer to which you wish to connect, you must have administrator’s rights set up.

5.1 Remote Desktop Setup [menu]

Remote desktop is disabled on VŠE computers by default. To be able to connect to a computer through Remote Desktop, you must activate it first and perform required settings.

Remote Desktop setup
1. With your right mouse button, click on the Start menu (alternatively press `Win`+`X`) and choose System.
2. In a newly opened windows, click onSystem information. Depending on your monitor resolution, you’ll find the menu either on the right or on the bottom of your screen. In Windows version 10 LTSB 2016, this menu is not implemented, so continue with point 3.
3. In left menu, choose Remote Access Setup.
4. Check Allow remote connection… and click on Select users….
5. Click on Add.
6. Into the empty input field, enter your user name and click Check names. Confirm your selection by clicking OK.

5.2 Power mode setup [menu]

In order to be possible to connect to a computer through Remote Desktop, the computer must be powered on and not in sleep mode. For this reason it’s necessary to set the computer not to go to sleep automatically. In newer versions of Windows 10, the system will prompt you to change your power scheme when you’re enabling Remote Desktop.

Power mode setup
1. Right click the menu Start (alternatively press `Win`+`X`) and choose Power options.
2a. In the menu Sleep mode spánk select Never.
2b. In Windows version 10 LTSB 2016, click on Change setting which is unavailable at this time and check the option High performance.

5.3 Connecting through Remote Desktop [menu]

To connect through Remote Desktop you’ll need to know the name of the computer to which you wish to connect. This computer name is included in the icon “Computer” on desktop (in format VSE-xxxxx). Alternatively, click the Start menu with your right mouse button and select System, one of the items in the system information window is the computer name.

Connecting through Remote Desktop
1. You can connect to remote desktop through Start -> *Windows Accessories* -> Remote Desktop Connection.
2. Enter network name of the target computer (in the format vse-xxxxx.ad.vse.cz, to which you wish to connect and click on Connect. (It is possible to use IP address instead of the computer name as well).
3. Enter your username and password to InSIS and click on Connect. If you’re presented with a window regarding untrusted certificate, continue by clicking *Yes*.
